Ok. For those of you unfamiliar with origami diagrams, dash-dash-dash lines mean valley fold (points away from you) and dash-dot-dash lines mean mountain fold (points towards you). For me, dot-dot-dot lines mean cutting.

For this you’ll need to start with a square of paper and have a pair of scissors, a protractor, and a pencil at the ready. The paper should be either very thin, or as I have it, very large; the ten-point spirograph requires more folds than the eight point.

1: Fold diagonally in half.

2: Fold into quarters as shown.

3: Rotate 45 degrees so that it appears as in the next picture.

4: Use your protractor to mark every 18 degrees as shown.

5: Starting from the open side, fold the top layer only along the marks, alternating between mountain and valley folds.

(It should look like an accordion after that)

6: Flip the whole model horizontally, so that the accordioned flap is on the bottom.

7: Fold the uncreased flap the same way, using the creased flap as a template to guide you.

(FULL ACCORDION! This shows the square unfolded to 1/2.)

8: Compress the accordion as shown in the next picture.

9: You will notice there are inner flaps. You have to cut off the top points, and where you cut should be determined by the innermost flap; try to cut just at the top of that shortest flap. (Flap is a very silly noun.) Also cut off the bottom points as shown.

10: Cut out a triangular section as shown.

11: Another, slightly smaller…

12: Again. In this step and the next cuts be sure to keep an eye on the back side of the model; the paper tends to creep during these cuts, and you could end up severing an important piece if you don’t watch out.

13: Another…

14: You know the drill. (Heheh it looks like a drill I’ll be quiet now)

15: Smaller cuts…

17: OK UNFOLD NOW…

Bam! There it is! A beautiful ten-point spirograph, as seen in Homestuck. Tape them to the ceiling at your Homestuck christmas party! Use them as your tree-skirt!

Blow people’s minds! Put an eight-point spirograph in the middle! Find some green paper for the large one and make a horde of small red ones, tape ‘em together for a wreath! Show me what you do with them! Please! Thanks for reading!

My hands have always been a bit shaky, but lately I’ve noticed that even with the stylus held completely still, I get cursor jitters. So, since I pride myself on my nice lines, I decided to find something to fix that.

LazyNezumi is a noise/interference reduction and smoothing tool that works with most Wacom tablets, and can be bound to nearly all drawing software. It doesn’t stop the jitters, but it predicts the amount of noise behind them and smooths your lines to match. I’ve tested it here in Photoshop CS6, and it works frigging wonders.

If you have this problem, I suggest you go download it. It’s simple and elegant as heck, and it makes your lines as smooth as buttered silk.

One Layer Painting Hair Process Tutorial

Hello! This is a quick process/tutorial on how I paint hair on one layer. I don’t.. really know how to make a tutorial so I more or less explained my messy process …. I hope it is helpful even if a little. If anything is confusing, just ask!

I use PAINTTOOL SAI and the main brushes I use are the basic pen tool, for blocking in big shapes of colour, or light shading. And a custom pen brush, in which has more of a pen pressure to it; I use this one for highlights, detailing, and strong shading. NOTE: I also use a different stabilizer when I shade. I lower the stabilizer with the basic pen brush because I want an even tone when I shade large areas as opposed to detailed areas where I might need a steadier hand and a more fine bold line; thus, with the custom brush, I up the stabilizer. These are the settings I’m most used to. Feel free to experiment however!

ALSO…. The eyedropper (ALT KEY) IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! It is a lifesaver and really speeds up your painting process!!!

I will demonstrate how I paint hair using one layer. First, I have the sketch on Layer 1. Then I add a second layer beneath the sketch layer called “BASE COLORS.” I plan all my colours out first on this layer with the basic brush. I also plan where the light source it after determining my colours. I don’t go very detailed on this layer.

Next, there are two things you can do.

1) You may create another layer above your sketch entitled “DETAILS.” You can then start to blend and refine features of the face and the hair, etc, on this layer. If you mess up, you always have your sketch to fall back on because it is on another layer. If you are not comfortable with one layer painting, this is more recommended for now. As you go, you can also simply create new layers for different parts of the drawing like the hair, as will be demonstrated, and let’s say, clothing as well,etc.

2) Or you can merge the “BASE COLORS” and “SKETCH” layers right now as I have done in the above image. And right now, I’m directly detailing the face on one layer. I will detail a bit of the face for now before going about with the hair.

Okay, again, you can create another layer for “HAIR” or continue on one layer.For the sake of this tutorial, it’d be easier for me to show you on a different layer but it’s technically still painting the hair on one layer hehe. Here we go!

On the “HAIR LAYER,” I begin with a color that will be a dark in my palette for blonde hair. I begin to redefine the strands of hair from my initial sketch. I want the hair to part a little differently with more curve from the top of his head. Ultimately, these lines will help guide you in shading the strands of hair.

The next few steps doesn’t have a right or wrong way to finish the shading of the hair. The goal is to ultimately blend away all the initial sketch lines and the guidelines you made on the hair layer. This is done with applying highlights, midtones then darks and other shading effects to complete the look. You are always welcome to duplicate the layer you are working as you go if you are afraid you will mess up the layer. It’s also a good idea to duplicate so you can always have something to fall back on if you ever change your mind on some drastic edits! Let’s go!

Let’s start with redefining the basic colours. I have the lightest/highlight colour making its way from the topmost strand around the top of his head [A]. From there, then there are midtones flowing down to the tips and the strands that are framing the face [B]. The darkest areas are facing down or are towards the bottom near the ears and forehead. I also have darker tones on the outlying edges of the hair shape [C].

I use the custom brush on low opacity and low stability to begin blending the strands. I start with the lighter tones by drawing on top of the guidelines. I continue doing this by blending the highlights with the hair base colour and also the darker tones. Remember, the eyedropper tool really helps out with blending!!

Some techniques I like to do is creating shapes with darker tones then use a thin brush to draw strands on top with a lighter tone. It’s an easy way to create loose strands and give the character’s hair a more natural look. And in this screenshot, I’m continuing blending and redefining my shapes. Remember, you can always duplicate the layer and continue experimenting!

Another technique you can do is creating branching strands. You do the same thing again creating dark shapes from the top of the head to where you want to end it. Then overlap it with thin lines of a lighter tone. From this strand you can have other strands branching off of it.

(haha excuse me while I continue detailing the face too… eep)

Okay! Now the hair has been rendered more. Now to add some finishing touches, you can add an even lighter highlighter at the top of the head and a thin line at the ends of certain hair strands. The key is not to overdo highlights and keep the brush thin. You can do the same for darks.

And now more effects! What you can do, depending on whether you created a separate layer for the hair or kept to one layer all this time (If so, awesome!) is that you can create a clipping mask and experiment with gradients and textures.

What I like to do is to create another layer on top of my painting, and then use the basic brush at low opacity and 300 px+ to create a soft halo/gradient. You can also use this to add shadow towards the bottom of the painting. Adjust the brush and color and experiment! You can also use a clipping mask with textures. If you made a different layer for each component of your piece, this part may be easier; otherwise, do several clipping masks for your single layer and simply erase or mask certain parts!! I added a darker shading on the sides of the head for the hair!

Draw whatever you want to "glitch" up

use the square select tool...

...and move parts of the object just a little, to give it a cool effect

keep doing this and even add and cut squares in if you want

here I used another layer and placed a blue square over top of it, and turned the opacity down to 34% (changed the BG color so you could see better )

Cut squares into the blue square..

now lock the opacity on it, and go crazy with colors. Glitches are usually pretty insane with colors, so don't try to make it blend or compatible with your object

now I go back to my original glitch layer and raise the saturation all the way up. It gives it a nice look.

Then I draw an outline over top. This isn't really necessary, but I find it makes things look nicer :3

i really don’t know how to say the same thing over and over again but my situation and my family’s situation is dire as fuck.

our landlord raised the rent by £300 for the second year in a row, because it means he can get out of paying for the tenancy agreement. he planned for this hike in rent to make us homeless because he wants to demolish parts of the property and do them up so he can resell for profit like the slimy little grubby shit he is.

it isn’t just me at risk here, if it was just me, i wouldn’t be begging tumblr for money. i, on my own, have been homeless in winter before. this time, it is my mother who has lung cancer, my cat who is recovering from surgery and myself, a 19 year old whose attempts to find a job that will pay enough to keep the three of us alive have been fruitless and are continuing to be.

i cannot just up and leave, nor can i crash on a non-existent local friend’s couch. the rest of my family is unwilling to lend any aid whatsoever, believe me, i have asked and begged and cried at and to them, they do not care.

i’m sorry to all the people that are continually seeing me on their dash with this, but this is honest to god my last resort. i have passed the point where i care if i sound needy or desperate or hassly, because i have been forced to be needy and desperate and hassly or my family and i will be homeless and die.

we are two females and the shelters in my area are not nice. the area i live in is not nice. i really don’t know how to make this point any clearer. they literally found a pair of sawn-off baby’s legs a two minute walk away from my house a few weeks ago.

i have been forgoing eating on and off for three months just so i have enough money to feed my mother and cat. we have had to stop paying both the tv license and heating bills because they were bills that were crippling us. i’m typing this while wearing a shirt, jumper, cardigan, and dressing gown all at once.

you are not obligated to donate, you do not have to apologise to me if you don’t have money to donate. but the very least you could do is spread the link around like wildfire because as much as i do and as much as i save, £4500/$7250 is a lot of money and i can only scrape together a fraction of a fraction of that in the time available to me.

i am barely 19, i have already had to deal with the deaths of my three siblings, i have already had to deal with being homeless on my own for a year, i have already had to deal with constant emotional and physical abuse for 16 years, i have already had to deal with my father stealing and absconding with my trust fund, i have already had to deal with my father never paying maintenance, i have already had to deal with taking care of my terminally ill grandmother for three years taken out of my college education while my aunts did fuck all to help, i have already had to deal with 900x more than i am fucking prepared or equipped or should have been expected of me to deal with and i can’t deal with this because unlike every other time this is money i need and not sheer fucking willpower and drive.
